My artistic practice seeks to construct my evolving fantasy of paradise. With my ceramic sculptures and installations I often incorporate jungle waterfall scenes and imagery from the packaging of favorite childhood candies, including strawberries, white rabbits, and flowers. I interpret paradise as a psychological space or mood synonymous with happiness - eternally desirable yet out of reach. Handbuilt in porcelain or white stoneware, my utilitarian sculptural vessels harness an ever expanding visual vocabulary inspired by my mixed-race heritage and my lifelong fascination with imported Asian goods. Realized with a lush, decidedly feminine aesthetic, culturally assigned markers of beauty, kitsch, and formation of identity are vaulted, simultaneously playful and earnest.
